Tapio Kotkavuori is a Magister of the Temple of Set and he has an essential role in the practises and information sharing of northern magical context. He is also the author of two books on the subject of Left Hand Path.

Terra Hyperborea contains a selection of Kotkavuori's sound-magical Workings recorded in 2001CE. At the time, recordings were made under the project name Vaskikäärme. These recordings have now been remastered and are publicly available in CD-format for the first time. The album contains also a high-resolution version of the Underground Tunnels-video.

Musically artist himself describes Terra Hyperborea as "post-apocalyptic dark-ethno-ambient". The TenHornedBeast rises again.

In the summer of 2007 Cold Spring Records released “The Sacred Truth”, the first CD by TenHornedBeast. A dark and menacing soundscape of funereal ambience and soaring, burning feedback.

“My Horns Are A Flame To Draw Down The Truth” sees five new compositions from black ambient / doom overlord Christopher Walton, taken from the same sessions that gave forth “The Sacred Truth”.

The Finnish label Anima Arctica introduces another new artist, with the name Tervahäät (fi. "Tar Wedding"). The album cover shows pictures of forgotten old grey villages in forbidding wintry landscapes. These images lead us into the Tervahäät´s chilly music, coming from a world of it´s own.

The first sounds on the record - eerie analogue feedback and plucked strings (guitar or banjo?) make me think of Halo Manash for a while, but this association is soon forgotten: Tervahäät is more musical somehow, closer to metal or progressive rock even, yet extremely slow, haunting and droning to it´s character. It truly evokes the feeling of old villages, forgotten in the shadow of deep fir woods in the Finnish hinterlands, an alien reality. Musically Tervahäät is a mixture completely of it´s own: there are elements of progressive rock, black and stoner metal, dark folk, ritual dark ambient as well as drone. Yet it is none of these. Often I think this is a combination of the sluggish tempo of Earth meeting the wintry sound of Burzum. There are some spoken and sung vocals, and vague gloomy percussion. The sound has a pure taste of organic sources and instruments with analogue effects.

The end result almost almost makes me taste the humid wood of a forgotten cabin in the woods, hear the ghostly humming of the trees and feel the cold wind carrying spirits of the dead through the wall springs. Tervahäät is all in all a very successful and original mixture, which should find friends among fans of both dark ambient and gloomy metal. For a debut album it is amazingly mature and whole. The Infant Cycle is a project of the Canadian artist Jim DeJong working under this name since 1994. It may seem surprising, but all these 13 years he remained in the underground of experimental music, and his name is well-known only to inveterate enthusiasts and explorers of this strange phenomenon. The project has put out 6 full-length albums on cassettes and CD-Rs, several singles and an amazing series of minions called "Clear Shape" released in ultra-limited editions on transparent vinyls of unusual forms (square, hexagon and triangle). Jim has also recorded a lot of collaboration works with such musicians as Big City Orchestra, Dronaement, Orphx, Aidan Baker, Delphium, etc., some of them were published by his own label The Ceiling. The Infant Cycle's music has never been notable for tensity or ornateness, instead of this it focuses on the subtle aspects of sounding of separate timbres and their combinations. Such textural orientation allows to create a completely peculiar effect, and the seeming minimalism carries into the contemplation of the infinity of possible microsound combinations. In this connection, Jim knows how to get on with both rhythms and drone ambient prostration. Among his favourite instruments are Poly-800, shortwaves, feedback, field recordings and altered vinyl records. Vinyls deserve special mentioning. Jim carved the runout grooves of records and thus created simple and unembellished (yet in some ways, unpredictable) rhythm patterns. Once he decided to start a project severely limiting the sound sources to one carved playout and the operational sounds of his old 4-speed Califone record player. Additional noises were generated by running a razor blade along the platter while it was spinning (the blade at different altitudes, and the platter at different speeds which was picked up by the needle), and the tone arm being vibrated into different tones by a violin bow (amplified via the needle). An early track (called, fittingly "Playout (Early)") appeared on "Lágrimas De Miedo N°8 - Sund", a compilation CD coming with the eighth issue of France's "Fear Drop" magazine (2001). Two excerpts were also released as a free promotional 5" by The Ceiling to announce the then-upcoming CD release of "Playout" on the American label Merchants Of Sound. But the label soon folded out, and the recording was lying and lying in the bins of The Infant Cycle's archive. And now we are infinitely glad to have an opportunity to present this work to your attention.

Nine years after their last release (Night of Pan), the Italian Dark-Folk Wave band par excellence have finished a new collection of songs, now available on SmallVoices. The band was born in the winter of 1984, when former Throbs of Pleasure Giorgio Parmigiani and former Les Blousons Noirs Massimo Mantovani met in some punk rehersal room in Modena, their hometown. The third original member was former T.A.C. Gregorio Bardini, and together they gave birth to a band influenced by the ideas, philosophy and magickal opus of Aleister Crowley. “Thelema” was the obvious choice for a name. Thelema were immediately hailed as one of the best gothic bands in Italy, even if their roots were punk and their leanings were more towards experimental and industrial sounds, as the many tapes produced through the years testify. The original cell, Giorgio and Massimo, has never been broken, altough many other musicians have joined them through the years. One thing must be said: even if their releases are not many, they never quit. Even when the band split (more than once and for long spans of time), the magickal link between them always kept them busy working, through music or other media, on the discovery and realization of their True Wills. And now they’re back. Mature and disillusioned, self produced. Once again, they’re hard to label. Once again the sounds have changed. BURNT MEMORIES is different from NIGHT OF PAN, which was different from TANTRA, which was different from ROSA+CROCE (see their site - www.thelemaband.com - for a list of all their releases). The old strenght is not immediately here, as the music seems softer (but - who knows? - the live set could be a BIG surprize) and more oblique (Eno is one of Massimo’s heroes) than ever, but the violence is still present in the lyrics and in the story/concept which links all the songs in BURNT MEMORIES, and so is the Magick, that they never abandoned and which has never abandoned them.

The science fiction film "The Space Voyage" was first shown in Soviet cinema theatres in January 1936. The showing was preceded by two years of work at Mosfilm studio done on a firm scientific basis - the consultant of the project was Konstantin Tsiolkovsky. With his help Soviet cinematographers managed to create a surprisingly realistic image of a journey to the Moon for that time - long before the beginning of real space research. The film narrates about the bravery of young pioneers, the willingness of Soviet women to always come to aid, the fearlessness of scientists and their determination to sacrifice their lives in the name of science. Serious approach to shooting didn't prevent the director V. Zhuravliov and the screenwriter A. Filimonov from treating the plot with humour, but in general the picture is just saturated with powerful heroic spirit! The original film had a soundtrack compiled of various classical music compositions. But what can be more appropriate to the constructivist spirit of Soviet time than the retro-futurism of St. Petersburg's noise scene classics? The Vetrophonia duet consisting of Nickolay Soudnick (ZGA) and Alexander Lebedev-Frontov (Linija Mass, Stalnoy Pakt, Veprisuicida, etc.) solved this task with enthusiasm. During 2005 while working in the ZGA studio they laboriously collected samples, recorded the parts of electronic and acoustic instruments and composed collages for each specific scene of the film. The result turned out to be beyond all praise. The DVD-R with the movie has an option of turning on English subtitles, comes with a booklet containing an article about the shooting process and is packed in a special cardboard sleeve. Past Time is a selection of compositions by Thomas Bjelkeborn between the years 1987-1996. All of them are highly artificial-sounding pieces of electro-acoustic avant-garde, with some short but effective vocal clips in them. In keeping with the genre, the material is highly disjointed, and I for one couldn't get any real grip on it despite several (17 full listen-throughs, to be exact) attempts. The segments each track is formed of come in short, dissimilar burst that are hard to concentrate on. Yet at the same time the number of elements is low enough to prevent the formation of a wall of noise -effect out of the diversity. The are several absolutely wonderful parts, but those are hard to wait for amidst the chaotic whole - especially since the shortest of the tracks is almost 9 minutes long, and the great segments just a few seconds at most each. A fascinating exception to this is a brilliant two-minute wave of noise at the end of the Beatles-ish named Within Without, an example of noise music at its best. In the end, Past Time leaves me absolutely cold. Nevertheless its combination of stylishness, excellent echo structure and the exemplary sound production quality common to Elektron's records hints very much that it might be an album many fans of electro-acoustic music would enjoy a lot. There is a big gap between “rational”, verbal language and the pre-symbolic language of our emotional and unconscious mind. Music is perceived partly with our conscious mind, who can analyze it and reflect on it. On another part, it is perceived by our unconsciousness, by our “primal consciousness” that lies “under” the rational mind.

Though often counted among the bands associated with the so-called underground stoner rock scene, the U.S. CHRISTMAS influences span much further than that that scene’s foundations in 70’s hard rock or 80’s heavy metal, delving into psychedelia, space rock, experimental and beyond. Fusing their influences, USC developed a sludgy, feedback loud and heavy rock sound that helped them take up a very specific place among so-called modern avant-underground movement.

Salt The Wound is the third album in the band’s discography and the first officially pressed release. It is comprised of some of the selected, rerecorded, and rearranged songs from their first two albums, Prayer Meeting and Bad Heart Bull, plus three live tracks of which two songs do not have studio-version analogues yet. Seven studio tracks for many remain the high point of USC as extreme downer acid-psych-space rock. Ur was born from the collaboration between Federico Esposito and Mauro Sciaccaluga, both hailing from the hardcore-punk scene and from bands like Heartside (F.E.), Never Was, Downright, Kafka, Stalker (M.S.). The two joined in 2003 to work on F.E.’s industrial solo-project (a.k.a. Den LXV) live set, later they decided to collaborate and improvise together to create a new entity. Andrea Ferraris joined the band in the early days of 2005, contributing to define further on the sonic identity of the combo. A.F. is well known for having played and recorded with different bands ranging from hardcore to indie-post rock to experimental music (Airchamber3, Deep End, Burning Defeat, Permanent Scar, Onefineday, Ultraviolet Make Me Sick, Permanent Scar, etc…). A unique deluxe collector's editon of traditional Pamir music "Aryan Memory". The set comprises a 6-page double DVD digipack holding two audio-CDs, a DVD and a 20-page full-colored booklet with information on musicians and conventional musical instruments of the Pamirs as well as a 100-page full-colored book in 14x25 cm format which describes the history of the Pamirs, beliefs and traditional ways of life of local residents (about 200 illustrations, texts are in both Russian and English). All components are packed in a bright-colored cardboard box. The Pamirs territory, being an almost inaccessible region, has preserved to this day tokens of the most ancient human culture, symbols, music, worldview, which are at least several millennia old - the spiritual foundation that gave birth to the greatest European and Asian cultures. But it should be mentioned that Pamir music is relatively unresearched, there have been issued only about five CD recordings, of which only one or two were favored with positive responses from the indigenous population of the Pamirs, because the spirit of this ancient civilization completely dissolves in recording studios and stays alive only when the music is performed in traditional environment. This recording of traditional Pamir music, presented in the "Aryan Memory" edition, is one of a few in this list, that had captured musicians in a fully unconstrained state and where the impact of sound-recording equipment was kept to a minimum. Particular attention should be given to the DVD, which is an integral part of the set. The film was shot both in the Pamirs in the River Bartang's Valley and at the Museum of musical instruments in Gurmindzh. It is an hour and a half long and it demonstrates the Pamir nature, it's ancient culture, dances and music and also exposes the psychology of the natives. There is no voice over or subtitles, the film relies mostly on meditative and trance-like perception. The book contains a lot of photos of forbidden regions of the Pamirs which in the recent times have been absolutely inaccessible to foreigners and are hardly accessible even now...

Photographer and videoartist Yuri Elik is primarily known as one of the founders and permanent members of multimedia project 2012, creating audio-video installations on various contemporary art festivals (SKIF, Heilige Feuer, Multivision, etc.). Apart from this Yuri performs on his own making video- and slide-shows for a number of experimental musical bands in St. Petersburg. Yuri is also the video show author for the performances of Simon Magus ballet written by D. Kakhovskiy and the designer of several CD artworks and websites.

Gosha Solnzev (also known as "Van Gog" - 1g0g) - big industrial showman, leader of the project Noises of Russia well-known in Russia, organizer of several festivals, such as "Noise vs. Glamour", "Military Days", "Noisy Women", etc. Gosha has always claimed that he plays funeral music, so it's no wonder he showed interest in the phenomenon of voices of the dead, discovered by Friedrich Jürgenson in the late 50s of the past century. Electronic Voice Phenomenon (voices of the dead, Raudive voices) are the voices of anomalous origin appearing while making records on tape recorders or other electronic audio devices. EVP researches claim and have proof that this is a possible way of communication between physical and some other non-physical planes of existence.

The exploration of this phenomenon led to an effective cooperation between Van Gog and Yuri which resulted in a series of live performances with the "Voices of the Dead" program and this short film, with 24 minutes an obscure psychedelic drama evolving in front of the spectator. A multi-layered collage of concrete visual images and kaleidoscopic colour fields constantly transforms, accompanied by unusual and uneasy sombre ambient with real voices of the dead samples interlaced in it's structure.

As a bonus this disk also contains a 12-min. slide-film "City Spirits": alternation of photos by Yuri Elik with his own soundtrack constructed from city noises. Yuri skillfully focuses attention on subtleties of usual things that remain unseen to the eye of a usual human being, generally too busy with thinking over his insubstantial problems and forgetting about the beauty of the world surrounding him.

The release is packed in a special cardboard sleeve and goes with a booklet with an encyclopaedic reference about the phenomenon of electronic voices.

"Amidst a spacious fabric" is the third full length album by Wilt, the dark ambient american project that surprised the whole genre with his debut "The Black Box Aesthetics" in 2000. James Keeler, the man behind Wilt, creates encompassing atmospheres made of deep drones, slow soundscapes and a lot of variations, using original sound sources that bring something interesting to a style where blend electronics are too often prominant.

The 11 untitled tracks on "Amidst a spacious fabric" were created with only sounds recorded with a zither, then manipulated and treated to built slow and hyponitzing tracks. The listener is taken to a dim lighted room, where tones are echoed and basses rumble. But this is not all, since a lot of accoustic noises from the zither are also used in this album, adding a lot of surprises and depth to the dark textures.

Experimental but very well arranged and mesmerizing, "Amidst a spacious fabric" could be compared to the works by Lustmord, Archon Satani or Megaptera, but possesses a unique, deep touch that people who know "The black box aesthetics" will easily recognize.

Athanor is proud to finaly release the legendary live in Arnheim from 14.9.1985 of Zero Kama. Michael DeWitt’s Zero Kama was the precursor of the ritual and majick inspired music scene with bands like Coil or Psychic Tv. Their label Nekrophile was a big influence on many individuals and also for the creation of Athanor.

Zero Kama did only two performances, in Amsterdam and Arnheim. This last one being presented here for the first time on CD. In concert, Zero Kama’s sounds was quite different than on their only studio album « The Secret Eye of LAYLAH ». They used accoustic instruments aswell as bass and guitars. For this concert Zero Kama were Michael DeWitt (concept, tapes, voice, bone instruments, shenai, violin, percussion), Muki Pakesch (tapes, guitar, bass drum), Didi Neidhardt (bass, bass drum, congas, percussion), David Aranyos (bass, bass drum, voice, percussion),Wolfgang Lehner (super-8 film and slide projection). Live mix by Martin “the Viech” Wich. The Cd also features the interview Zero Kama did for Stad Radio in Amsterdam 1985

As a bonus CD we added the rare tracks Zero Kama did previously to the legendary Secret Eye of Laylah LP released by Athanor as a ltd edition 10". It includes the track Liber AL I.13 based upon a verse from Aleister Crowley's Liber AL vel Legis or The Book of the Law, this track is the only remaining part of a later abandoned project in which Zero Kama intended to set Crowley's Liber AL to music. Other tracks, like "Prayer of Zos", are based on the writings of Austin Osman Spare, whose Zos Kia Cultus was another major influence to Zero Kama’s work. Both CD were remastered by Andreas Resch and packaged as a 6 pages digifile with archives photos from the concert.
