Pär Johansson was born in Södertälje, Sweden in 1972 and besides his M. Sc. in computer engineering, he has studied music, acoustics and Chinese language and culture. He was a student of electroacoustic composition at EMS in 1995-97 for Anders Blomqvist, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Andreas Hedman, Jens Hedman, Erik Mikael Karlsson and Peter Lundén. Since then he has also worked there as an administrative assistant and lecturer in acoustics and sound synthesis.

Pär Johanssons music is narrative, sometimes containing recognizable sounds, but it is not conventional programme music, though the source of inspiration often is literary or philosophical. Nor is it conceptual sound art since the aesthetic aspects of a piece are just as important to him as the underlying ideas. The intention is that it should be possible to listen to the music without any background knowledge.

Pär wants to avoid an overly intellectual approach to music, while not abandoning the formal stringency typical of Western art music, and strive for an abstract, emotional narrative not unlike that of a Chopin ballade. His works contain several parallel layers in counterpoint - a trait borrowed from ancient art music. This method of working in layers has led him to compose almost exclusively multi-channel works. This lovingly curated double disc retrospective of previously unreleased works by the Swedish electronic pioneer Rune Lindblad (1923-1991) is a difficult listen, it must be said, but the jarring, ugly, tuneless music captured here gives an interesting insight into the world of a man who in some circles (fairly obscure ones admittedly) is lauded as one of the true giants of twentieth century music. Lindblad, in his early years, worked in isolation, seemingly unaware of the conflict between the Cologne school of electronic music, championed by Stockhausen and Koenig, and the Paris school of musique concrete, of which Henry and Schaeffer were leading exponents. In 1956, prompted by a sudden awareness of these workstreams, both of which could be compared to his own compositions, Lindblad put on a concert of musique concrete in Gothenburg, together with Bruno Epstein and Sven-Eric Johansson. The sleeve notes to these discs tell the story. "This was the first concert of its kind ever in Gothenburg, and caused a scandal. The audience got angry and aggressive when they heard the experimental music and afterwards demanded their money back. The concert was totally slated by the press, one reporter describing it as pure torture". This about sums it up actually. Some of the tracks presented here - 1973's 'Associationer', for instance - are pretty much unlistenable. This is not to say that they are bad. In fact large parts of this appeal to me very much indeed. The compositions are extreme, in the same way that Karel Appel's "Questioning Children" is an extreme painting, or Peckinpah's Straw Dogs is an extreme film. They are not there to be enjoyed. They are there to be endured. And therein lies the satisfaction. Anybody with the faintest interest in electronic music should listen to these discs at least once, if only to put Lindblad's successors - from Merzbow to Autechre, from Eric La Casa to Sonic Youth - into context. I have to confess that when I received this disc I had never heard of Rune Lindblad: now, hearing his works, I am in awe of him. [Fluxeuropa]

Gathering two russian projects involved in the Zhelezobeton label, this split demonstrates the cold, heart-freezing power electronics of Rupor Udara and the old-school electric discharges of Kryptogen Rundfunk in an essential and condensed 36 minutes.

As soon as the pulsating loops and suffocating piano lines of "Demagnetizator" kick in, Rupor Udara builds up an emotional and painfully brutal world of raw vocals and understated melancholy, with tracks such as "My Daughter Is No More" proving themselves to be monuments to his skills.

During the second part of the split, the focus shifts to Kryptogen Rundfunk's cunning abuse of analog retro-electronics and pounding drones. "Sendung für deines Mark" is only a small sampling of what this project has in store for us, but what a sampling it is. Mechanical loops duel with warm intoxicating bass drones for the spotlight, and once they've kicked in ("Maschinentanz"), there's no shutting down this engine.

The disc ends with the brief and climatic "Kill n' Dance", welding together the two projects for 2 minutes of chaotic drumbox madness and inhuman vocals.

More than two years after its last full-length disc on Mechanoise Labs, Sedaye Marg returns with its first CD release titled "Frashogard", which literally means "renewal" in Zoroastrian lore.

Fusing its signature processed and distorted percussions with tape loops and strident electronics, "Frashogard" retains key aspects of the project's previous incarnations while incorporating its persian influences more visibly, as the focus shifts to the events in the last two decades which have shaped its inspirations and its existence. Akrasia is an old question dealing with the weakness of the will. To behave "akratically" is when one acts against his better judgement, committing acts that are known to be wrong but yet still going through with the motion. Markus Lonebrink wanted to explore not so much the philosophical issues at hand, but rather the subjective experience of akrasia itself. To learn of the underlying motives of when one acts akratically. Certain events in the akratic process felt natural to him and it was those he tried to integrate into these soundscapes. There are no conclusions described in the music, but there might be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps the shadow of a hint of why we humans sometimes act as irrationally as we do. A shared quest to gain better knowledge of oneself through this self-revisionistic ambient journey filled with ethereally lush passages that give way to a truly visionary and immersive experience. Sleeping Pictures is the ongoing musical project of Marc Blackie (Defacato, Ophedia, Disappointed Virginity) - [Vocals/Lyrics] and Gary Parsons (Static, Bestinality) - [Guitar and other instruments]. The year 1995 saw both Blackie and Parsons lurking at the time within the lower regions of South London. A meeting of minds was bound to occur and thus it did, the pair being brought together by mutual acquaintances on the basis of their interest in difficult and downright obscure areas of music, art and literature. Both had previously played and performed with a number of bands, so the idea of a collaboration was struck upon and Sleeping Pictures where formed in the summer of that year. Gathering their composure, the two began creating the now obligatory experimental/industrial/"call it what you will" noises using whatever came to hand, whilst not flicking through obscure literature and tapping their feet to unpopular records. Blackie busied himself with electronics and occasional vocal duties whilst Parsons used and abused various household items and musical instruments. A collaboration with wandering minstrel, medieval re-enactor and one time Cindytalk member Steven Scutt, saw the music taking on a more musical and lyrical flavour and the violin arrangements added by one time member Renée Rosen (Sol Invictus) led to a live performance supporting Shockheaded Peters and Knifeladder.

Now a song based outfit, as opposed to their first more experimental incarnation, Blackie took on the vocal and lyrical duties whilst Parsons began to compose a wide range of music taking in all manner of contradictory and at the same time complimentary influences and inspirations. To celebrate the transition, a number of tracks were recorded at Matt Howden's Red Room studio, leading to requests for contributions to compilation albums and further collaborative work with the likes of Tony Wakeford, John Murphy, Hunter Barr, Lloyd James and Dan Knowler. To this day, two CDs have been released, both in limited numbers. Backwords consisted of out-takes and live performances and Life Discounted was a taster of material from Nether Edge. This long delayed debut album, largely recorded at London's Retina II studios is planned for release in early 2003 with material for the next album already being written. Sleeping Pictures have also recorded "The Killing Tide" for the recent Sol Invitus tribute album and "Girls and Dogs" for a soon to be released Scott Walker tribute. [Fluttering Dragon]

Most of the time the holistic auditive narration of these songs works in the fields of ill-logic, instinct-driven - like a mindless spirit, like a small child, like an animal in frenzy... one observation of change in surroundings, and the thoughts fly to next subject causing somewhat unexpected results... Sometimes the stories work against linear time, like the ending track where the soldier in bunker get stumbled by memories of childhood, and lives his lifetime backwards in minutes. Some stories examine places and entities, to which time has no effect at all like the track "Those graves under the Bay of Bothnia".

Strongly present are the places most near to the scarred heart of this sound sculptor & songwriter: Lightless winter days of Lapland filled with anguish, physical and mental illness, and substances to kill the freezing effect of depression and climate... The nights, explorations and feasts of Moravia & Bohemia filled with absinth and wine... Quiet huts and nostalgic alleys and pathways of small northern Ostrobothnian villages... This mysterious Russian project has always been a kind of unique folklore/musical mythology projection.
