Pär Johansson was born in Södertälje, Sweden in 1972 and besides his M. Sc. in computer engineering, he has studied music, acoustics and Chinese language and culture. He was a student of electroacoustic composition at EMS in 1995-97 for Anders Blomqvist, Lars-Gunnar Bodin, Andreas Hedman, Jens Hedman, Erik Mikael Karlsson and Peter Lundén. Since then he has also worked there as an administrative assistant and lecturer in acoustics and sound synthesis.

Pär Johanssons music is narrative, sometimes containing recognizable sounds, but it is not conventional programme music, though the source of inspiration often is literary or philosophical. Nor is it conceptual sound art since the aesthetic aspects of a piece are just as important to him as the underlying ideas. The intention is that it should be possible to listen to the music without any background knowledge.

Pär wants to avoid an overly intellectual approach to music, while not abandoning the formal stringency typical of Western art music, and strive for an abstract, emotional narrative not unlike that of a Chopin ballade. His works contain several parallel layers in counterpoint - a trait borrowed from ancient art music. This method of working in layers has led him to compose almost exclusively multi-channel works. This lovingly curated double disc retrospective of previously unreleased works by the Swedish electronic pioneer Rune Lindblad (1923-1991) is a difficult listen, it must be said, but the jarring, ugly, tuneless music captured here gives an interesting insight into the world of a man who in some circles (fairly obscure ones admittedly) is lauded as one of the true giants of twentieth century music. Lindblad, in his early years, worked in isolation, seemingly unaware of the conflict between the Cologne school of electronic music, championed by Stockhausen and Koenig, and the Paris school of musique concrete, of which Henry and Schaeffer were leading exponents. In 1956, prompted by a sudden awareness of these workstreams, both of which could be compared to his own compositions, Lindblad put on a concert of musique concrete in Gothenburg, together with Bruno Epstein and Sven-Eric Johansson. The sleeve notes to these discs tell the story. "This was the first concert of its kind ever in Gothenburg, and caused a scandal. The audience got angry and aggressive when they heard the experimental music and afterwards demanded their money back. The concert was totally slated by the press, one reporter describing it as pure torture". This about sums it up actually. Some of the tracks presented here - 1973's 'Associationer', for instance - are pretty much unlistenable. This is not to say that they are bad. In fact large parts of this appeal to me very much indeed. The compositions are extreme, in the same way that Karel Appel's "Questioning Children" is an extreme painting, or Peckinpah's Straw Dogs is an extreme film. They are not there to be enjoyed. They are there to be endured. And therein lies the satisfaction. Anybody with the faintest interest in electronic music should listen to these discs at least once, if only to put Lindblad's successors - from Merzbow to Autechre, from Eric La Casa to Sonic Youth - into context. I have to confess that when I received this disc I had never heard of Rune Lindblad: now, hearing his works, I am in awe of him. [Fluxeuropa]

Gathering two russian projects involved in the Zhelezobeton label, this split demonstrates the cold, heart-freezing power electronics of Rupor Udara and the old-school electric discharges of Kryptogen Rundfunk in an essential and condensed 36 minutes.

As soon as the pulsating loops and suffocating piano lines of "Demagnetizator" kick in, Rupor Udara builds up an emotional and painfully brutal world of raw vocals and understated melancholy, with tracks such as "My Daughter Is No More" proving themselves to be monuments to his skills.

During the second part of the split, the focus shifts to Kryptogen Rundfunk's cunning abuse of analog retro-electronics and pounding drones. "Sendung für deines Mark" is only a small sampling of what this project has in store for us, but what a sampling it is. Mechanical loops duel with warm intoxicating bass drones for the spotlight, and once they've kicked in ("Maschinentanz"), there's no shutting down this engine.

The disc ends with the brief and climatic "Kill n' Dance", welding together the two projects for 2 minutes of chaotic drumbox madness and inhuman vocals.

More than two years after its last full-length disc on Mechanoise Labs, Sedaye Marg returns with its first CD release titled "Frashogard", which literally means "renewal" in Zoroastrian lore.

Fusing its signature processed and distorted percussions with tape loops and strident electronics, "Frashogard" retains key aspects of the project's previous incarnations while incorporating its persian influences more visibly, as the focus shifts to the events in the last two decades which have shaped its inspirations and its existence. The new album by Silence & Strength has been in the making for almost 5 years, as some early pieces have been written already in 2004, being composed and recorded in various locations and conditions. This monumental work realized in an album of 13 tracks and 77 minutes constitutes an impressive narrative, which opens up a door to the magical worlds of Gustav Meyrink.

Akrasia is an old question dealing with the weakness of the will. To behave "akratically" is when one acts against his better judgement, committing acts that are known to be wrong but yet still going through with the motion. Markus Lonebrink wanted to explore not so much the philosophical issues at hand, but rather the subjective experience of akrasia itself. To learn of the underlying motives of when one acts akratically. Certain events in the akratic process felt natural to him and it was those he tried to integrate into these soundscapes. There are no conclusions described in the music, but there might be a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel and perhaps the shadow of a hint of why we humans sometimes act as irrationally as we do. A shared quest to gain better knowledge of oneself through this self-revisionistic ambient journey filled with ethereally lush passages that give way to a truly visionary and immersive experience. Sleeping Pictures is the ongoing musical project of Marc Blackie (Defacato, Ophedia, Disappointed Virginity) - [Vocals/Lyrics] and Gary Parsons (Static, Bestinality) - [Guitar and other instruments]. The year 1995 saw both Blackie and Parsons lurking at the time within the lower regions of South London. A meeting of minds was bound to occur and thus it did, the pair being brought together by mutual acquaintances on the basis of their interest in difficult and downright obscure areas of music, art and literature. Both had previously played and performed with a number of bands, so the idea of a collaboration was struck upon and Sleeping Pictures where formed in the summer of that year. Gathering their composure, the two began creating the now obligatory experimental/industrial/"call it what you will" noises using whatever came to hand, whilst not flicking through obscure literature and tapping their feet to unpopular records. Blackie busied himself with electronics and occasional vocal duties whilst Parsons used and abused various household items and musical instruments. A collaboration with wandering minstrel, medieval re-enactor and one time Cindytalk member Steven Scutt, saw the music taking on a more musical and lyrical flavour and the violin arrangements added by one time member Renée Rosen (Sol Invictus) led to a live performance supporting Shockheaded Peters and Knifeladder.

Now a song based outfit, as opposed to their first more experimental incarnation, Blackie took on the vocal and lyrical duties whilst Parsons began to compose a wide range of music taking in all manner of contradictory and at the same time complimentary influences and inspirations. To celebrate the transition, a number of tracks were recorded at Matt Howden's Red Room studio, leading to requests for contributions to compilation albums and further collaborative work with the likes of Tony Wakeford, John Murphy, Hunter Barr, Lloyd James and Dan Knowler. To this day, two CDs have been released, both in limited numbers. Backwords consisted of out-takes and live performances and Life Discounted was a taster of material from Nether Edge. This long delayed debut album, largely recorded at London's Retina II studios is planned for release in early 2003 with material for the next album already being written. Sleeping Pictures have also recorded "The Killing Tide" for the recent Sol Invitus tribute album and "Girls and Dogs" for a soon to be released Scott Walker tribute. [Fluttering Dragon]

Stories and tales inspired by dreams, nightmares, insomnia, sleepwalking, blurry history and future, magick and logic, secret and public essence of certain and uncertain places, fountains of life and curtains of death.

Magical viewpoints to seemingly everyday topics, and everyday approach to spiritual activities of certain and uncertain times and places influence the compositions varying from subtle drones to archaic rhythms, from harmonies and melodies blinking like hope in child's eyes, to brutal approach of noisy and pounding industrialish percussions. Vocals from monasteries of religions that don't exist (anymore? yet?) to gloomy whispers and spoken word.

Most of the time the holistic auditive narration of these songs works in the fields of ill-logic, instinct-driven - like a mindless spirit, like a small child, like an animal in frenzy... one observation of change in surroundings, and the thoughts fly to next subject causing somewhat unexpected results... Sometimes the stories work against linear time, like the ending track where the soldier in bunker get stumbled by memories of childhood, and lives his lifetime backwards in minutes. Dälek Turntablist, Still (Hsi-Chang Lin) goes solo and unleashes a dark ambient masterpiece that borders on sonic terrorism. Created using only Technics 1200's and an array of effects pedals, Still's REMAINS is not a "turntablist" record in the traditional sense. Drawing from (and adding to) the history of alternative turntable use, REMAINS is an ambient record whose textures at times run side by side with the work of PHILLIP JECK or APHEX TWIN. Two laborious years were put into the 35 minutes that comprise the album. Each track was painstakingly mapped out and played live in the studio. ”After my previous releases as StillStand and the "Heimat" set from beginning of 2001, "Symbiosen" is a new approach to abstract ambient music. StillStand is still strictly synthetically music, atmospheres are created and not imitated - but with "Symbiosen" new aspects are included in the sound. While before sounds were the most important medium and rhythm and melody were secondary, now all three aspects get their share of influence in the tracks. There are beats and loops, melodic repeating lines and spherical parts, all colliding inside of the tracks. This is the concept of "Symbiosen": Using the methods of my project Monoid, rhythm and distortion to influence the sound of StillStand and to increase the range of possibilities. "Symbiosen" was recorded right after "Heimat", where Monoid and Conscientia Peccati (my third project) have been transformed to fit into an ambient concept - and I found it most interesting how the sound of Monoid and the concept of StillStand worked together. Now, after trying to bring this concept further into a melting of ambient and industrial sounds, I think "Symbiosen" is more accessible then the previous StillStand releases as there is more activity, more movement. Sturmast from Hungary plays a unique kind of folk influenced martial industrial music. Far from being an instrumental one-man computer band putting some classical loops and battle sounds together, Sturmast is a collective fronted by Varga Gabor. Here real musicians play real instruments, thus introducing the good old band-feeling to the martial industrial scene. The music contains powerful, eruptive live drums (toms, snare, bass drum), haunting violin and cello, acoustic guitar, and a selection of traditional folk instruments (e.g. kaval, jaw harp). Even the keyboards are "live" recorded in some ways, and a considerable part of the samples and special effects are made by the band itself. Absorbing atmosphere links the compositions which vary from hypnotic monotonous to marching repetitive, from moody experimental to beautiful, melancholy-filled delicate. The lyrics, portraying the fight of the historic and modern, spiritual and secular, uplifting and ill-fated, are mostly in Hungarian (one song is in German), with English translations in the stylish digipak with booklet.

"Mesmerize" is Andrea Freschi's fifth full-lenght work. Once again it was created with almost no samples and keyboards as most of the sounds included consists of field-recordings manipulated by computer technology and softwares.

The result falls into the dark ambient / experimental musical territory, althought the overall effect is aurally dynamic, as usually happens with Subinterior's releases.

"Mesmerize" basically follows on from the previous Subinterior release, "The Chrysalis Secret", showcasing his ability at creating deep and obscure atmospheres without falling into cheap clichés.

The album spreads over five tracks and has a dense start with "The White Space", which becomes more minimal and then is filled with mysterious noises resembling an haunted aviary.

"The Chrysalis Secret" is Andrea Freschi's fourth work and comes after the self-released "Outfall" and "Insomnie" (both recently re-issued as a full-lenght disc by Silentes), and "Obstacles", which was released in Japan by Deserted Factory.

"The Chrysalis Secret" is a long evocative track divided in three parts. The journey begins with a sort of repeated bell-like sound which is soon backed by an unsettling and obsessive echoed pad.

Along the road we encounter deep drones - both of a windy and metallic nature - and abstract textures keep on overlapping themselves creating slow but ever changing atmospheres, like an infinite serie of reflections created by subtly different distorting mirrors. Low frequencies make room for more recognizible sounds of what seem to be flowing water and animals. We can even imagine (...or are they really there?) a few piano notes at some point... Sometimes the music seems to stop and drones turn into a minimalistic affaire, but suddendly melodies emerge from the background filling the air with colours for a while, just before turning back to black again. Intertwined with some isolationist passages, "The Chrysalis Secret" offers many abstract moments and more complex sections of aural psychedelia. We can't help to recommend it, even to our most demanding listeners. [Afe]

Sulphur is a dark ambient / death industrial project founded at the turn of the milenium to capture both bleak emotions and a value for the sanctity still inherent in life. Hailing from the confused landscapes of Adelaide, South Australia, deep rumbling tones and layers of noise were combined in a search for transcendance in a wall of sound. Influences and inspirations are many, though the aim is to include themes and sounds quite unorthodox to the genre and strive towards a distinct individuality in sound.

The recording process for a Sulphur release is driven by an emotion that brings a certain tone to the mind of the creator, this is created using a variety of distorted samples and effects and utilised into a specific appropriate pace into a structured 'song'. The project began with 'Sechzehn Schmerzen' an initial outlet driven by beats and structured compositions, later moving into a purely noise based recording until slowly evolving into darker, deeper and more atmospheric compositions.

An hour of experimental dark industrial soundscapes play out over 10 compositions, with stunning digital manipulation of photography added to assist the listener in contemplating the themes presented. [Cranial Fracture Recordings]

"DELAYED" by Sunao Inami is the latest in a strong line of releases on his own electr-ohm label, established about 3 years ago. A project of a sculptor and an ethnographer Denis Shapovalov from the city of Rostov-on-Don, who is also the one and the only member of ADRIVA, ENMERKAR and MATTER. "Fictio" calls to self-dependent comprehension of forms by sublimation of clods of clay and granite monoliths with alchemy of archaic Drone Ambient, giving birth to resonances and fluctuations of Time.
