When Eastern Europe only starts discovering "noise" music, in Japan - Meka of "noise' music, a new age of artists, naming themselves "post noise", wave is arising. One of them - Kouhei Matsunaga, well know from his split editions with Merzbow, constructed an interesting recording named "Complicated high still now…" from his archive tracks. Album consists of four tracks. Their totality makes an illusion of deep, sometimes dark, psychedelic mood to the listener. Album starts with silent and anxious track. The second one consists of prepossessing electronic loops. At the time of hearing the record the listener undoubtedly can recognise Japan music school. The third and the fourth tracks, which are the longest, Kouhei starts to rage over using the best Japan weapon - "noise". Noise itself is quite aggressive and reminds of roughest Japan "noise" epoch creations but the construction of the sound is different and characteristic only to Kouhei. "Complicated high still now…" is undoubtedly Japan "post noise" music masterpiece.

Hladna and Kryptogen Rundfunk - behind these names stand two St. Petersburg-based musicians playing experimental noise music. They both nourish a tender passion for old electronic instruments and often use them at their concerts and on recordings. One warm sunny day they gathered and decided to play on two analogue rhythm synthesizers "Rokton" and "Formanta". These are actually two identical instruments which were produced in the Soviet Union by two different factories. Each of them is the "brain" for electronic drum-kit, but can also be used separately - as a multi-channel tone-noise-generator or rhytm-machine.

Kryptogen Rundfunk used his device smoothly, evenly and calmly while Hladna expelled from his more sharp and unpredictable sounds. Worth mentioning are Hladna's non-standard ways of making sound - on the last two tracks he opened the back plate of his synth and played not only using knobs but also getting inside and abridging contacts with his own hands (for which he was incidentally struck by the current a couple of times).

Live recording without any processing, with all it's natural crackles and tasty overloads. Abstract electronics, minimalism and a little noise.

Threatening new collaboration taking in parallel worlds of Extreme Computer Music and Black Metal. KTL is Stephen O'Malley (SUNNO))), Khanate) and Peter Rehberg (PITA). A six part collision amongst the increasingly fading prescences between the light and the dark. This work came about as the two were composing sound and music for a piece by Gisèle Vienne and Dennis Cooper, entitled 'Kindertotenlieder'. It must be stated that this CD is NOT the soundtrack to said piece, but a separate project. However, elements may appear in the finished piece which is to be premiered in Brest, France, March 2007. Pieces were recorded in a resistance fortress in southern France during a thunderstorm. Others in a wintergarden drenched in the sunlight.

One of the most enigmatic, eclectic and cosmopolitan bands of the Italian electronic scene returns with a singular sonorization - originally commissioned by the sci-fi festival Invasioni and performed live in Cosenza in Summer 2001 - paying a tribute to the cult movie Terrore nello spazio (1965, a.k.a. Planet of the Vampires and The Demon Planet) by Mario Bava (1914-1980), the undisputed and unforgotten Maestro of Italian gothic and macabre cinema (with films like Black Sunday, Black Sabbath, Blood and Black Lace, etc.), an ingenious and ironic innovator of the low budget productions that was appreciated and revalued in France, UK and USA much earlier than in his native country. Based freely on the story (later plagiarized by Ridley Scott’s Alien) of the spaceships Argot and Galliot, attracted to land on a dying planet by ectoplasmic alien-vampires that in order to escape to other worlds need to take possession of the body of astronauts turning them into living zombies, Le Forbici di Manitù have created a sharp-witted hybrid of B-movies retro-fascinations and stylized genre contaminations, by mixing samplers and analogic electronics with an instrumentation hinting at jazz (flute, clarinet, congas, vibraphone) and disseminating the score with surreal cut-ups of dialogues from vintage films (where horror queen Barbara Steele can be heard in conversation with the high-brow characters played by Monica Vitti or with the silly comedians Franco and Ciccio), to permeate it with a mid-Sixties mood.

Active since 1983 with an always transforming line-up - in this case composed by six individuals - rotating around the mysterious figure of the founder and guide Manitù Rossi, Le Forbici di Manitù start off with Terrore nello spazio the celebrations for their 20th Anniversary, that will continue in the following months with the release of the double album Tagliare (live + remixes). Moving freely between pop songs and electronic experimentation and crossing through the most diverse genres and styles, from conceptualistic noise to therapeutic trance-ambient, from folk-noir to technoid d’n’b, from progressive suites to plagiarist symphonies, the band has published till now, besides various cassettes and tracks on compilations, six CDs for prestigious Italian and international labels. Light Of Shipwreck is a one-man band operated by Ben Fleury-Steiner, a Deleware-based drone artist and owner of the excellent Gears of Sand Recordings imprint, which has released discs from some of our favorite ambient/drone/drift artists including Encomiast, Cordell Klier, and Aidan Baker. It was actually through Aidan Baker that we found out about Ben's Light Of Shipwreck project; knowing that we're fanatics for "heavy ambient" sound, Light Of Shipwreck was recommended as something we should check out. At first expecting something more along the lines of the kind of floating ambient rumble that marks so much of my favorite Baker solo stuff, I was pleasantly surprised by how percussive the tracks I heard online from LOS were, the dense, ominous feedback drones and heavy rumbling ur-riffs floating freely over a mechanistic tribal-rhythm freakout. We ended up getting in touch with Ben from Light Of Shipwreck and it turned out that he had a nearly hour-long disc that he wanted to have released through our Crucial Bliss imprint, and here we are: a three-track full length of rich, crushing power-ambient, titled From The Idle Cylinders, a reference to the American Objectivist poet George Oppen whose work is a consistent influence on Light Of Shipwreck's imagery, with huge slabs of resonant sheet metal shimmering in an ocean of heavenly feedback and reverberating guitar drone, and surges of droning tribal Krautrock percussion floating along with distorted ambient doom powerchords and washed out vocal cord bliss, each track running upwards of 20 minutes in length. A totally breathtaking piece of music, like Steve Reich, Brian Eno, Can, and Earth swirled together into an austere, hypnotizing heavy-trance masterpiece. He is also a performing improviser on the electric guitar and electronics, most notably in the group Decision Dream. Collaborating Torture is one of the last known recordings made by Matt Gibney AKA Hollowing, who died in January 2006. For this album Mathias Josefson, a sound-artist from Stockholm, collaborated with a number of his colleagues who provided him various source sounds to work with.

The name Sadalsuud refers to a star of the same name in the constellation of Aquarius. The name comes from an Arabic phrase meaning "the luckiest of them all". Nevertheless the album is rather earthy-sounding, yet mystical and surreal, almost claustrophobic at times. The sound is vaguely reminiscent of some works by Nurse With Wound, Maeror Tri or The Hafler Trio, but carries the trademark Moljebka Pvlse feel. An unsuspecting pre-listener described Sadalsuud as "a visit to a supposedly haunted house, though only once you've entered the house you begin to grasp the real meaning of haunting."

Due to this, “Open Closure” and “Chaos Constrain”, the first two tapes released by A&T records in spring and winter 1996, are now made available again by TOSOM. This time both titles come as a CDR with full colour cover, multiple inlays including the original cover art and multiple bonus tracks. Only minimal sound editing and de-noising was applied to the material to keep the original raw spirit of these first Monoid documents.

After the good resonance of “Open Closure”, “Chaos Constrain”, the second Monoid tape, was released at the end of 1996. Here the seeds of the first tape are followed and further developed. This includes more minimal and abstract tracks where the only instrument seems to be the feedback of an undistinguishable sound source as well as song-like structures with spoken lyrics. The sound itself is more digital this time, using a broader variety of synthesizers and percussion modules. Still, hard rhythms, distortions and samples are still dominant in this release. The bonus material of the TOSOM re-release features among others an extended version of the experimental fragments used on the original tape. [Label info]

Monoid started as a side project of Conscientia Peccati, to offer a channel for rhythmic industrial and experimental pieces not suitable for the ritualistic and neoclassical sound of CP. After one compilation release, “Open Closure” started the Monoid release series in spring 1996. On the tape mainly minimalist and rhythmic tracks can be found, suitable for the industrial dancefloors of that time. But also some more experimental and ambient tracks found their way on the tape, showing a glimpse of future things to come. The sound is rough and rather analogue, featuring vocal samples and lots of distortions and feedback. The bonus tracks of the TOSOM re-release inlcude an alternative version of “Spalt”, maybe the best-known track of the original tape. [Label info]
