Gematria Analysis of Arktau Eos : Mirrorion

Dedicated to Fratres A.I.H. and A.I.L.

Frater A.I.L. has explained that the name ‘Arktau Eos’ was derived from meditation on the ‘Mirrorion’ project, and says “ ‘eos’ is Greek for light and ‘arktau’ is almost like ‘arktos’ and ‘tau’-cross combined, but this was not premeditated…I connect the phrase with the starlight or ‘starfire’ of the northern constellations”. It seems most appropriate, therefore, to use Greek gematria in exploring any correspondences with the name.

Arktau = 822 = agiazo – I make holy, I consecrate

aphtharsia – immortality, imperishability

Setheys – Hidden Place, Hidden One; the name of an abyss in the Cosmology of the Gnostic Bruce Papyrus

chraomai – I make use of.

Eos = 1008 = Eos – is specifically ‘first light,’ the dawn, and Eos is the Goddess of the Dawn

epegeiro – I stir up

paideutes – a teacher.

Arktau Eos = 1830 = katasphazo – I slay, I slaughter

Chnouphis – Chnouphis, a variant form of Chnoubis (or Khnubis), the Gnostic Lion-headed Serpent deity.

‘Mirror’ is derived from Latin ‘mirare’ – to look at - but a hypothetical Greek word ‘Mirrorion’ would suggest a translation of ‘little mirror’ and would have two possible spellings, depending on whether the central ‘o’ was read as omikron or omega.

Mirrorion = 550 = osios – holy (adjective)

pou – where; somewhere

toxon – a bow

upo – hypo-, by; under, below.

Mirrorion = 1280 = osios – holy (adverb), ‘in a manner pleasing to God’

ekneuo – I leave without being noticed

suzugos – syzygos, or syzygy, yoked, paired; a pair of connected or correlated things; a partnership

trichos – hair

upodechomai – I receive, I welcome as a guest.

All available correspondences have been included, no matter how obscure.

Perhaps the most interesting feature to note is that if the two values for ‘Mirrorion’ are added together, they give 550 + 1280 = 1830, the number of ‘Arktau Eos’. Moreover, it can be seen that 550 represents ‘holiness’ as a state of being, while 1280 indicates ‘holiness’ as a form of action; combined as 1830, they represent a creative process that may be described as ‘the consecration of the first light’. This gematria indicates a high level of spiritual integration and magical purpose in the work. The correspondence of Arktau Eos with Chnouphis is another, highly significant relationship to explore.

“The lion-headed serpent was popular in magic and is often found pictured on amulets. The daimon is a syncretistic combination of the Egyptian creator god Chnoum, the serpent Kneph, and the star knm”.

(Glossary definition for Chnouph (Chnoubis) in Hans Dieter Betz et al:‘The Greek Magical Papyri in Translation, including the Demotic Texts’, University of Chicago Press, 1986).
